Recon Industrial Controls

Scroll

During my senior year at Bergen County Academies, we were able to pursue a Senior Experience internship, where students would get real-world experience working at companies on Wednesdays instead of going to the classroom. For my Senior Experience, I worked at Recon Industrial Controls. Recon is a small company in Englewood, NJ that creates hardware and software for measurement, control, and simulation. I chose Recon because the founder, Joseph Barbetta, was very hands-on and gave students a lot of educational value through the internship.

The primary goal of the internship was to develop multiple “internet of things” projects to demonstrate the capabilities of their custom LabRecon hardware and microcontrollers for education and robotics. A few examples of projects I created include the following:

  • A remote-controlled spy tank

  • A smart thermostat

  • An alarm clock connected to multiple small devices.

Each of these projects were accessible through the LabRecon web interface, and could be controlled remotely through an internet-enabled device. I later used many of these learnings on my senior capstone and future arduino microcontroller projects.

Overall, I had a great experience learning from Joe, who is now part of the BCA faculty. He helped me learn a lot during high school, especially in the realm of electrical engineering.
